Voting for and against: Clinton / Obama edition

It pains me, I feel the need to write this diary... but after reading the coverage of the West Virginia primary around the blogosphere this needs to be said.

When I voted for Barack Obama last week, I was voting for Barack Obama, not against Hillary Clinton and not against John Edwards (also on the W.Va. ballot).

I happen to think Barack Obama will make an even better president than Hillary Clinton. Just because I prefer Obama over Clinton doesn't make make me anti-woman, anti-white people, or anti-anything else. I voted for Obama, it's as simple as that.

So, for the love of God, why do some people insist a West Virginia vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote against Barack Obama? Further, why do so many insist it's a vote against Obama just because of the color of his skin?

Yes, there are some West Virginia Democrats and Independents who will vote in the Democratic primary next week who will vote for McCain in November. Unlike other states to our south, a generation of the most conservative Democrats have not left the party in droves. Even so, President Bush has an astoundingly high 85% disapproval rating in West Virginia*, so there's no telling where those votes will end up in November.

Indeed, the vast percentage of Clinton voters will turn out in November for Obama -- right now they prefer Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama. That doesn't make them racist, misandrist, or prejudiced against people from Illinois.

You know, that vote for Hillary Clinton is probably just that: a vote for Hillary Clinton.

* Correction: 85% disapproval rating is among those planning to vote in Democratic primary.

Well said (4.00 / 3)
I've noticed and been bothered by the same thing throughout this whole campaign.  The MSM want a battle.  Something where both sides battle and only one comes out alive.  And you HAVE to pick a side.  That's why there was this talk about the "Dream Ticket."  It wasn't going to happen to unite two really great candidates.  The MSM thought the party needed it to prevent civil war.  Party insiders and campaign staffers have been saying all along that this is playing out like it is because they are both good candidates and people are having trouble choosing.  The MSM is just ridiculous.

Awfully sad how some so-called progressives show as much quickness and ignorance to stereotype West Virginians and Appalachian Americans, if you will, as racists and misogynists stereotype people of color and women. Some so-called progressives have a little information, find something to back up their preconceived notions and then label the entire group. Yes some people are racists and won't vote for Obama. That's true in West Virginia as well as MICHIGAN.

When a man embarks upon a crime, he is morally guilty of any other crime which may spring from it. Sherlock Holmes.

And true in many a place... (4.00 / 3)
Racism exists...

...a couple hours east of W.Va. in Washington, DC, in the corridors of K-Street and along the southeast banks of the Anacostia river.

...a couple hours north of W.Va. in the suburbs of Cincinnati and many a place in PA. To the east, all around Richmond and many a McMansion in affluent areas of Virginia.

...even farther north in the burbs of Buffalo.

Racism exists all over the United States. (As does sexism and all sorts of other ugly forms of discrimination.)

great article Clem as always.... (4.00 / 2)
You also have to remember too that people here in Appalachia love the Clintons more than people in any other area of the country except their home state of Arkansas.  The so-called experts always tend to forget that very important fact....

actually the Clintons used to live in Arkansas (4.00 / 2)
thought I'd better clear that up.  They still are very popular there though...

Great Thread... Clem (4.00 / 2)
I fully agree Clem... I voted for Obama, and will work my butt off to insure that we put a Democrat in the White House even if Hillary were to pull off a miracle between now and the convention.

I am so sick of the use of words like WAR and Destruction and RACE in the media when they refer to probably one of the most historical campaigns ever run in our country, and it a Primary election not a General.

I've been in West Virginia for 18 years, and have lived in a lot of other diverse parts of our country over the last 40 years.  Folks in West Virginia are basically no better or no worse than people everywhere, and thats why when it comes to throwing the bast**ds out in November I believe this time our country will do the right thing.

I just checked the status of the local newspaper online polls (4.00 / 3)
Readers of the Gazette put Obama ahead of Clinton 4126 to her 2972.

On the other hand, Daily Mail readers put Clinton (1231) ahead of Obama (678). It is no surprise that 1233 of the right wing local rag readers would vote for NEITHER.

Isn't it interesting that while the Gazette posted a three-way poll, the Daily Mail chose to keep McCain's name out of it?

Their editors undoubtedly noticed the large number of Republicans who have been voting for anyone BUT McCain in all of the primaries up to now.

Clinton could be in for a May 13th Surprise (4.00 / 1)
Great thread Clem, you have got the bloggers typing away at a torrid pace.  From my observation here in Berkeley county of the hard-working Obama folks, if this is any indication of how well the campaign is going through-out the state we could have a surprising victory coming on Tues. that will undoubtedly go down as the last straw for Hillary.  We could bring WVA to the forefront of primary politics. Hopefully Hillary will show class and support Obama to victory in November.
