Big Daddy Sen. Robert C. Byrd

Anne Barth!

by: Carnacki

Thu Jul 15, 2010 at 23:18:34 PM EDT

My hope is when Gov. Joe Manchin makes his official announcement Friday afternoon, it's going to be to name Anne Barth, Senator Byrd's long time staffer, to serve as senator in the interim until a new senator is elected.

She's well qualified to serve in the interim as a senator. She's a highly capable staffer and she understands how and where and why Senator Byrd stood on the issues.

West Virginia Results Thread

( - promoted by Carnacki)

10:55PM Another bittersweet night for me, just like two years ago. The two races I care the most about are lost in a night where the big picture is a huge victory for Dems.

I need a break. No more updates for at least the next 20 minutes. I think I'll head upstairs to the Tennant suite. Meanwhile, savor Obama hitting 270 here in a few moments.

10:52PM MetroNews calls it for Shelley. @#%$^@

We love you Anne. Thank you for giving it such a good try.

10:48PM McGraw (AG), Ketchum / Workman (Supremes) all looking good. Gus Douglass looking good, too.

10:42PM It's looking bleak for Barth. Most of Berkeley reports, increases Capito's margin. At this rate Capito is going to match or increase her 2006 margin.

10:30PM AG race: McGraw pulling away in the vote count even as the percentages are staying close.

It doesn't look good for Barth, her only path to victory is to hold even in Berkeley County and hit the jackpot in the remaining precincts in Kanawha County.

10:14PM AG race tightening. With 51% in, it is 50% / 50%. Walker is sneaking up on Ketchum, too.

9:59PM WV-02 results

Precincts Reporting:
169 of 591 29%
  	  	VOTES %
R SHELLEY MOORE CAPITO 49,263 54%
D ANNE BARTH 42,122 46%
Shelley Moore Capito leading by 7,141 votes

9:55PM On the path to pick up a couple of state Senate seats, the state house will likely remain unchanged.

9:47PM With 17% in, the casino vote is heading for an easy victory in Greenbrier county.

9:44PM It's still tight but we're looking good for the Supreme Court and AG races.

9:34PM A bit of a lull here. Natalie Tennant taking the stage to speak. Meanwhile, we're waiting for a significant number of W.Va. precincts to come in and also waiting for Obama to hit the magic 270 in called states.

9:27PM A few minutes ago, I provided a critical assist to make sure Natalie Tennant made it to the MetroNews table in time for a live on air interview... we're all about helping out in the little ways. :-)

9:26PM Big boos as CNN calls West Virginia for McCain.

9:24PM Anne Barth race a mixed bag. She's down with 10% of the vote in, but she's ahead in the critical Kanawha County.

9:12PM We finally got our act together. Carnacki will add national tallies in the comments. I'll keep the W.Va. updates here in the diary itself.

9:03PM 9 percent in

McCain 40,113 50%
Obama 39,913 49%
9% of precincts reporting

9:00PM 5 percent in -  Carnacki

Obama 29,212 51%
McCain 27,499 48%
5% of precincts reporting

8:54PM In state house races, Dems are all looking good and there are no Republican surprises.

8:54PM Interesting facts in the exit poll. Voters making under $50,000 went for Obama 54 to 44. So that group did vote their pocketbooks. Those making more than $50,000 went McCain 62 to 37. Race was an important factor for 15 percent of the voters - 67 percent of those voted for McCain and 35 percent of those voted for Obama. Carnacki

8:52PM Joe giving his speech. Repeating his  pitch to give healthcare to all workers. Now giving his pitch about using coal "the right way." He skipped the part of his recent stump speeches about "wind, solar, biofuel, and conservation."

8:40PM This is a kick-a$$ introduction video for Joe Manchin. Whoever put this together, great choice of music, great choice of pictures, great job. You know, I don't agree with many a thing the Gov. has done, but he really does have "the touch.'

8:37PM Too bad we can't call the election now

Obama 18,340 56%
McCain 13,812 43%
1% precincts reporting - Updated 4 minutes ago

CNN exit poll shows Obama did best here with 18-29 crowd (O 48, M 51) followed by 65 and older (O 46, M 51). Carnacki

8:25PM I hear this is a record crowd for the Charleson Democratic Party victory dinner. Looks like 400-500 people in attendance.

What are ya'll seeing in other races around the country, any early surprises?

8:22PM J-Rock leaves the stage. He's talking more about global warming than ever before. That's a helpful side-effect of the coal brouh-ha-ha this week. It's going to be a big challenge to get an honest discussion of energy issues in this state this upcoming year.

8:13PM Early voting from Kanawha County shows Anne Barth in the lead over SMC. That's a good sign. AB needs to win Kanawha County to pull off a win.

8:05 p.m. AP survey in West Virginia shows no u 'single unifying issue' for voters here. Carnacki

"I had no clue. I was just jumping back and forth,'' Burkhammer said when pressed to explain why he didn't choose Sen. Barack Obama.

"The other one's good, too,'' he said, meaning Obama. "I just think McCain's a little more qualified.''

snip

First-time voter Zecola Hall, 27, of Clarksburg, was undecided when she entered a VFW post to vote. She left after punching in a straight Democratic ticket.

"I really think we need change,'' she said. "I believe John McCain is Bush's flunky, to be totally honest.''

Anne Bolyard, 35, of Fairmont, said Obama represents her core values -- "that our country needs to heal, that we need to come together, that there are people who are disadvantaged and marginalized. And I don't believe that should occur anymore.''

8:02PM J-Rock takes the stage.

7:57PM It's not worth its own diary, but it's worth noting that our unopposed Treasurer John Perdue and unopposed Auditor Glen Gainer have shaken off all write-in opponents and secured re-election.

7:54PM Nick Casey just took the stage. He's still passing out the Kool-aid, predicting an Obama win in the state (in stark contrast to the CNN exit polls for the state). They're showing a Jay Rockefeller video now.

7:45PM Now that I've finished scooping Metronews, I'm going to returning to using this liveblogging thread for the rest of the evening.

The sales rep for MetroNews sitting next to me excitedly told me they were about to call the race for Manchin... I told him I'd already called it long ago. :-)

6:00PM I'm all set at the Marriott... look for pictures soon. Just before I left, I ran into a team of Obama Campaign for Change workers leaving for one last canvass!

Greer concedes AG race early?? In another fascinating tidbit, ReliableSourceWV reports seeing the Greer campaign pulling out of the Marriott about an hour ago. Maybe they expect to lose this evening, or fear a small crowd, and are looking to consolidate rallies with Capito or another Republican candidate?

4:30PM Larry Messina provides an analysis of early voting in W.V. His format buries the really good news. Looking at 15 of the most populous counties in the state, Republicans are down around 9% in the percentage of early voters in 2008 compared to 2004 and Democrats are up 9%!

That's yet another sign of a huge enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans in the state.

4:15PM Okay, I'm going to go ahead and start a live-blog results thread. Here's my first bit of news for the day.

First off, reports from the field are that all of the Campaign for Change and Democratic County offices are the state are flooded with volunteers. Here at the state HQ, we're packed to the gills with  a full house of phone bankers and a steady stream of canvassers coming in and out. There's lots of callers at the Barth HQ, and a sign wave going on in the street in between, too.

Meanwhile, over at the Republican HQ, the silence is deafening. If you dropped a marble on the floor, you'd need earplugs to protect yourself fro the roaring thunder.

Voting Machine Problem Reported in Logan County

by: Clem Guttata

Tue Nov 04, 2008 at 11:26:56 AM EST

The Anne Barth for Congress (WV-02) headquarters received a email from a disgruntled voter in Logan County this morning.

I went to vote for Mrs. Barth at the central city voting location in Logan county. Mrs Barth name was not on my ballot nor was that devil she is running against.

I went through it 6 times to find her name but I never saw it. Just passing along the troubhle I had. I hope Mrs. Barth wins she will have my support in the future as well.

We would report this problem to the Secretary of State's office except Logan County is ably represented by Nick Rahall in WV-03.

Marmet, West Virginia Rally Report

by: Clem Guttata

Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 22:21:07 PM EST

Marmet Rally

I went down to the traditional election eve rally in Marmet this evening. The turnout was down from two years ago when Sen. Byrd was in attendance but, importantly, there was good press coverage there.

There were three major highlights for my evening.

- I got to hear a rousing speech by Anne Barth. Good on ya' Anne! You've come a long way as a candidate since we met at your kickoff event in downtown Martinsburg earlier this year. You've run a great campaign and you have earned the honor to serve as our next Congresswoman.

- I added to my campaign button collection. Thank you very much SPS. You're a gem!

- I got to thank Thornton Cooper in person for his efforts on Anne Barth's campaign. As he promised during the primary, he has indeed helped the Democratic Party nominee. He deserves major kudos for that. Thornton, I hope you'll join us here at the site and add your voice, passion and knowledge to the West Virginia netroots. (BTW... I know you were intensely curious as to my "real name." I just couldn't bring myself to tell you it's Clark Kent Gates.)

I'm processing many more pictures from the day... look for a slide show post some time early tomorrow.

Swing State Project on WV-02

by: Clem Guttata

Sun Nov 02, 2008 at 07:16:02 AM EST

The most recent ratings update at Swing State Project includes this insightful analysis of WV-02:

There was no question Obama suffered from an "Appalachia problem" in the primaries, a key factor which led SSP to conclude that Democrat Anne Barth would face a seriously uphill climb in this district. And that's on top of everything else staring Barth down in WV-02: A pretty popular long-term incumbent (with a famous name), a conservative lean to the region, and a late start. (Barth was a last-minute replacement.)

But now, Obama is polling far better here than we originally imagined he might, suggesting that WV still believes in its ancestral Democratic roots. He almost certainly won't win the state, but his Pollster average is on par with Kerry's take, and many individual polls have shown the race here closer. And Barth, who has raised pretty well herself, has seen a late infusion of about half a mil from the DCCC. Shelley Moore Capito only got 57% against an underfunded challenger in 2006; she's still the favorite to hang on, but she could very well lose this time.

Anne Barth definitely has a shot on Tuesday. There's even a scenario where Obama can pull off an upset win here: if Republican voters stay home and the rest of the West Virginia electorate jumps on the national Obama band wagon.

Yes, we can!

Barth vs. Capito debate: Anne made us proud

by: Carnacki

Wed Oct 29, 2008 at 21:51:40 PM EDT

AnneBarth(Color)Anne Barth made her supporters proud at the debate tonight with Bush Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito.

For those of us who've seen Capito in debates before, it was the usual say one thing here, do something else in Washington D.C.

WEPM broadcast the debate and there will probably be a link later.

WEPM has a story up about the debate with a line in need of clarification:

More than 250 people were in attendance when the candidates for West Virginia's Second Congressional District faced off last night at Musselman High School in the final of the WEPM and Journal candidate forums for 2008.  Incumbent Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito (R) and challenger Anne Barth (D) sat down to answer questions from the panel and from the audience.  The debate was moderated by Blue Ridge Community and Technical College President Peter Checkovich.  Crowds lined the streets with signs supporting their candidates prior to the debate and supporters cheered and yelled during the debate itself, a sign of the excitement that has been created as this heated campaign nears a finish.

There were more than 30 people outside of Musselman High School lining the road for Anne Barth.

Six supporters of Capito waved signs about a half mile away at Centra Bank.

It was very telling that Barth's supporters were at the debate and Capito's were at a bank where executives have helped fund her campaign.

The ohter tellng thing was before the debate. Before the debate, Anne Barth walked through the auditorium, greeting people, whether wearing her buttons or Capito's stickers and thanking them for attending while Shelley Moore Capito was huddled with her staff behind the stage hiding from her constituents.

For those of us disappointed by the lack of representation from Capito and why we want to replace her with Anne Barth, the symbolism between the two could not be more apparent.

Capito even mentioned how she meets with people of the district in town halls and then corrected herself and referred to her notorious town hall teleconferences where only pre-selected people are invited to join and where questions are screened as opposed to meeting with all of her constituents.

Capito also claimed she was in the Eastern Panhandle so often that we were probably sick of seeing her. She's only half right there and it wasn't the seeing her part. Unless you belong to the country club in Charleston, you probably don't see Capito.

Capito claimed an ad by the DCCC (not Anne Barth's as the WEPM questioner mistakenly said) was a negative attack for pointing out Capito took campaign contributions from Big Oil. "The insinuation is my vote is for sale," Capito said. Tom Delay, Mark Foley, Jack Abramoff, and Ted Stevens could argue that Capito should remove the first three words from the preceeding sentence.

Barth, meanwhile, pointed out that the ad is truthful as to Capito's contributors from Big Oil and that she's criticized Capito's votes and not Capito herself, unlike Capito who falsely claims Anne Barth hasn't paid her taxes. While Anne Barth has focused on the issues and Capito's voting record, Capito resorts to personal attacks.

"This is the kind of personal attacks people are tired of," Anne Barth said.

On the Iraq war, Capito also told the same lie she told in 2006.
"I'd like to get out of Iraq, like everyone else, as soon as possible," Capito claimed, leaving out that every time it has come to a vote, she voted against resolutions to withdraw from Iraq. "I think we need to withdraw. I think we are withdrawing."

Capito's in Congress, has voted against withdrawal, and yet she's uncertain if troops are withdrawing or not from Iraq? She also said timelines "hand our enemy a roadmap to victory" yet now the administration has agreed to a withdrawal timelines she's for withdrawal? Under her twisted logic, does that now mean that Capito now believess in handing "our enemy a roadmap to victory"? Consistency isn't something Capito practices because as we've seen too often, she says one thing in the district and does another thing in Washington.

Anne Barth had a terrific answer on Iraq, saying that we never should have gone into Iraq that had nothing to do with Sept. 11th and instead should have finished the job in Afghanistan in getting Osama bin Laden.

On taxes, Capito defended her support for tax cuts for the wealthy, saying that the middleclass benefited when the largest cuts went to the rich since they create the jobs. She even conflated the average tax cut, ignoring much of the tax cuts went to the wealthiest 2 percent while the rest of us didn't see anywhere close to the $2,200 tax cut she claimed. The middleclass didn't come anywhere close to that. Meanwhile, Anne Barth said it was time for the middleclass to get the larger portion of a tax cut.

...

After the debate, Capito's staffers surrounded her to screen her from constituents from coming up to talk to her. Meanwhile Anne Barth worked through the crowd, even taking a question from a man covered in Capito stickers, who asked her about abortion. Anne Barth said she was pro-choice just like Capito. The man was taken aback. "I didn't know Capito was pro-choice," he said.

Telling. Voters who don't know Capito's record support her. Informed voters love Anne Barth.

Update

From an email

barthdebate

Here's the Anne Barth supporters lined up outside of Musselman High School early on before the people at the rally in Martinsburg joined us and the numbers doubled.

Update 2

Forgot the unintentionally funniest line of the night: Capito, a four term rubberstamp for the worst of the Republican agenda, claimed she was the candidate of "change."
